If you like them soft boiled, then this post is for you.
Today I am sharing another vintage thingie from my mother's family; this time from the paternal side; something that belonged to my grandfather's mother, Isabella Frances Parker Smith, affectionately known as Granny.
Here she is with two of her children, my Great Aunt Ruth and Great Uncle Francis "Parker", somewhere around 1915.
Our Vintage Thingie is her silver egg cup set. Quite fancy, eh? I can't even imagine eating eggs out of something like this, but my mother says it made them taste so much better.
My mother doesn't know anything about it's origins, but we do know that it was produced by the Toronto Silver Plate Company.
According to some information found on the internet, the company was founded in 1882, four years before Granny and Great Grandpa Smith were married, so it could have been a wedding gift.
And it was apparently well used, because we only have two of the original six spoons.
Three of the missing spoons were replaced with these lovely little spoons engraved with Granny's initials.
This is a picture of Granny and my mother in 1937. Granny died in 1940 (eighteen years to the day after her husband) at the age of 72. She was the mother of five sons and two daughters who lived to adulthood as well as a stillborn son and two sons who died in infancy. She was born in Buckingham, Quebec and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Sherbrooke, Quebec with her husband and much of her family.
Don't forget to visit all the other participants this week (link on my sidebar), I see some cool stuff out there.
PS - I did say I would post a Christmas card today, but perhaps I should look at a calendar next time. I'll be back with those cards on Friday.
Anna
Hi Anna, I love old pictures and stories that go along with them. I did a post a while back about a picture i have of my grandma with my dad and his twin brother as babies. I just love to hear about things from the past. Thanks for sharing, that was an interesting silver egg set. Look foward to seeing your christmas card. Amy from pinkdaizies.typepad.com

lovely! I would so use that set. My mother liked coddled eggs and I have some of her covered cups that were used to make them, but I have never seen an egg cup set like yours. My English mother would have loved it. Thank you for sharing.

What great family treasures you have. I do not eat eggs too often. When I do, I want them over well, with the yellow broken. Great blog and post.

Hello Anna, I love, your story and the egg cups. I agree, eggs do taste better in an egg cup. Smile. The photo of your grandmother holding your mother is wonderful. Great treasures with wonderful family memories.
Hugs, Jeanne
